CHIM. Gaz incolore et inodore, de formule C2H6, le deuxième terme de la série des hydrocarbures saturés. Éthane monochloré (synon. chlorure d'étyle), tétrachlorure d'éthane. Éthane hexasubstitué (cf. Hist. gén. sc., t. 3, vol. 2, 1964). Dans la molécule d'éthane, chaque atome de carbone est uni (...) à trois atomes d'hydrogène et à l'autre atome de carbone (CHAMPETIER, Chim. macromol., 1957, p. 21).
Rem. 1. Éthane entre comme élément de composition dans la formation de termes de chim. éthane-oxyéthane (cf. DUVAL 1959). Synon. éther (cf. ce mot II A). 2. On rencontre ds la docum. a) Éthanisation, subst. fém. Transformation en éthane (cf. DUPONT, Bois carburant, 1941, p. 105). b) Éthanisé, ée, adj. Transformé en éthane. Gaz éthanisé (ID., ibid.).

Gaz combustible, hydrocarbure saturé (C2H6), de densité 1,057 (deuxième terme de la série). || L'éthane liquéfié bout à 180 °C et se solidifie à −172 °C. || L'éthane, en se dédoublant sous l'action de la chaleur ou en brûlant incomplètement, peut donner naissance à deux hydrocarbures non saturés : l'éthylène et l'acétylène. || L'alcool, le glycol, les acides acétique et oxalique, les éthylamines sont des dérivés de l'éthane.
